Fredric Heeren Fredric will give a presentation titled “Who Monkeyed With Physics? – A Science Writer Seeks Rational Faith in the Absence of Proof that God Exists.” Sponsored by the FHSU Dept. of Philosophy, this talk will be given in the Main Floor Gallery at 7:00pm on Thursday, February 25th. About Fredric: John Mather (senior scientist for JWST, the Hubble Space Telescope’s replacement) says that Heeren “brings the latest space results down to Earth;” his account of modern cosmology is “a story well told.” George Smoot (co-winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics) describes Heeren’s writing as “ground-breaking,” “engaging,” “cutting-edge.” Heeren’s recent investigations have taken him to fossil sites that tell the story of life’s evolution – from early Cambrian and Precambrian sites across southern China, to the hominin findings at Koobi Fora, Kenya, to the Romanian Carpathians where he joined cave-divers excavating the earliest modern human remains in Europe. He has covered science news for over a dozen newspapers, magazines, and science journals. More information and publications by Fredric may be viewed at www.fredheeren.com. |

Following the contest portion of the evening, open mic poetry readings are encouraged for anyone who wishes to share their favorite works. Peruse previous contest-winning entries here. |
4th Annual Edible Books Festival The HPL Gallery will once again play host to the Edible Books Festival, a unique event which celebrates literature and food together. Participants create an entirely edible representation of a book or literary idea, which will be displayed Saturday afternoon before being judged (and subsequently devoured) at the close of the Festival. “Taster's Choice” and “Eye Candy” Awards are given in both Youth and Adult Categories. Any questions may be directed to Eric Norris, Adult Dept. Librarian, at 785-625-9014. View pictures of past Hays entries in the HPL Photo Albums. |
