Descriptions of Each Event
September 12 – Moon Pies @4pm
“Moon Pies” is an activity where kids have a chance to learn interesting details about our Moon. There will be different stations where they will get to learn fun facts, and at each station they will collect a pie piece. Once they’ve collected all of the moon pie pieces, they can put together their own moon!
September 14 – Passport to the Moon @4pm
How much do we know about the moon? We actually have geographic regions of the moon, just like we have on Earth! In this activity, kids will be on a mission over the Lunar Highlands and through the Apennine Valley, upon completion of this dangerous, daunting trek, children will be awarded with Moon Treats!
September 19 – Northern Lights Art Project @4pm
The Northern Lights are a gorgeous natural lights display known as an Aurora. Auroras have been known to occur over the North and South poles of the Earth. We will be using Water Colors and glitter to create your own Aurora!
September 20 – Oreo Moons @4pm
How well do you know your phases of the moon? Better yet – how good do you think you are at eating Oreos? We’ll be using Oreos to demonstrate the different phases of the moon! (Yum!!) We will also be making a Moon Phase flip book.
September 21 – Cooking on the Moon @4pm
What good can come from Marshmallows, Rice Krispie Treats, Frosting, Sugar and Sprinkles? We are going to get our hands on some delicious desserts for this activity, while forming the different layers of the moon. The only difference – the moon isn’t edible.
September 26 – Build a Lunar Lab @4pm
In a world with no atmosphere, no breathable air, and no gravity, how would you survive? You and a team of Astronauts will be building a Lunar Base out of a grab bag of materials. If you were to live on the moon, you’re going to need a place to work, rest, live, and have fun! This base has to be able to protect you from the extremely hot days and extremely cold nights. Will you and your team of astronauts survive?
September 28 – StarLab Activity @4pm
StarLab is an Inflatable planetarium where kids have the opportunity to look up at images of the night’s sky. We will be using StarLab to talk about constellations, star clusters, and our Solar System!
October 1, October 2 – StarLab Activities for All Ages
The StarLab planetarium will be open in the Main Floor Gallery for the public. Bring your parents, your aunts, and uncles! We’ll be doing sessions in increments of 20 minutes from 9am – 12pm on Saturday October 1st, and 2pm-4pm on October 2nd.
October 3 – Build your Own Rocket @4pm
The Rockets we’re making are made of Cardstock and Tape, but will get some serious air when fired from our Air-Compressor Launcher! In collaboration with the Astronomy Club at Fort Hays, we will be making Rockets to fire off on in a City Rocket Launch on October 8th from 9-11 am at the Ellis County Fair Grounds.
October 3 – StarLab Activity @6pm
StarLab is an Inflatable planetarium where kids have the opportunity to look up at images of the night’s sky. We will be using StarLab to talk about constellations, star clusters, and our Solar System!
October 8 – City Rocket Launch
In collaboration with the Astronomy Club at Fort Hays, we will be making Rockets to fire off on in a City Rocket Launch on October 8th from 9-11 am at the Ellis County Fair Grounds. Transportation to the Fair Grounds is NOT provided, so kids who wish to participate will need to have transportation arrangements and will need to bring a rocket to fire, which we will be made at the library on October 3. If you’d like to participate in this event, instructions for building your rocket at home can be picked up at the library prior to the launch.
October 9 – Observe the Moon Night on the Dike
For this activity, the FHSU Astronomy Club has offered to sponsor an “Observe to Moon Night.” We will be meeting on the dike, and the moon observation will last from 7-9 pm. We’ll have all kinds of telescopes and information available for the aspiring astronomer!
